[K-Movie] The Fatal Encounter 역린

Wiki link, here.
Pictures from the movie, here.

The story is not mainly about King Jeongjo, it highlighted the devotion of his eunuch to save his master's life at all cost.

Gapsoo was trained as an assassin and put into the palace by a secret organization to kill Joengjo. But since his adolescence, the young king and Gapsoo became close friends and Gapsoo vowed to protect the king.

Eulsoo was Gapsoo childhood friend, both trained as an assassin, when Eulsoo was instructed to kill Jeongjo, he tried to runaway from this organization by taking her lover Wolhye. But Wolhye herself was actually also a spy planted by the secret organization. Somehow Wolhye's act was found out and she was executed by King Jeongjo, therefore Eulsoo got no choice but kill the king.

In the end Gapsoo saved the king, sacrificing his life. Both Gapsoo and Eulsoo died. Jeonjo then found out about the secret organization and had them all banished from the land forever.

WAIT A MINUTE....
I watched this movie for HAN JIMIN, where's she ?

Well, Queen Jeongsun was a very young wife of Jeongjo's grandfather, this is the truth history. Political standard that time, didn't allowed concubines to be elevated to queen status. Therefore, if the queen died, a new queen must be selected from respected clan. That time Jeongjo's grandfather selected Jeongsun who was still a young teen, as his queen.

The age gap between Jeongjo and Jeongsun was about 8 years, but he gotta respected her as his grandmother.
Guess that's why in one article, Hyunbin told viewers that the reason why the grandmother was so young is because it is based on true history.

Thou history doesn't really emphasize Queen Jeongsun's involvement to get rid of Jeongjo, but most believed she got the power to control Jeongjo's rival party. After all, the Kim clan (Jeongsun's clan) was well-known for providing queens from generation to generation.

Jeongjo's mother, knowing the secret schemes Queen Jeongsun's did at back, secretly told a young maid to poison the queen, but was found out. Queen Jeongsun used this opportunity to threat Jeongjo by pointing out that she could execute her mother. But Jeongjo said the law must be obeyed and he is the protector of that law.

Jeongjo managed to convinced veteran general to defect to his side. The rebellion failed and Jeongjo finally settle down the matter. At the end, Jeongjo told the queen that he'd known already that the queen and her subordinates were behind his father's death, but his grandfather wanted to protect both side, therefore hid the proofs that could bring disaster to the queen and her political sides. Realizing she is no match for him, Queen Jeongsun no longer threatening the king anymore.

Histroically, after Jeongjo passed away, he was succeeded by Sunjo, but since the young king was very young, Queen Jeongsun as the most senior at that time, control the political temporary.

RATE : 4/5
Because there's not many Jimin's scenes T_T
