Review: [K-MOVIE] THE THRONE

Cast:
Song Kangho as King Yeongjo
Yoo Ahin as Sado
Moon Geunyoung as Lady Hyegyeong
Ji Jinhee as Princess Hwawan
So Jisub - King Jeongjo

First of all, because I am a huge fan of Dong Yi and Yi San, so cannot help but related and compared the movie with those TV series.

Short synopsis:
Rather then tell us about political conflicts in court, it is more about Sado's "foolishness" who failed to "be himself and success". Poor thing.

Jump to the critics and comments:

KING YEONGJO
King Yeongjo's child actor in Dong Yi was Lee Hyung-suk and he was super duper lovable. I know people have dark sides but Song Kangho as old King Yeongjo really kind of destroy that "cute childhood, charming adulthood, wise old"--image, not as charismatic as Lee Soonjae in Yi San drama.
The most hateful part (sorry, it's not hatred, just because I cannot find any else grammar) was when Song Kangho's King Yeongjo took another concubine from a palace maid... did all monarchs did it ? Well, care not.

Song Kangho as King Yeongjo is OK as long as you don't compare Lee Seonjae's version of King Yeongjo in Yi San or in Dong Yi (childhood).

PRINCE SADO
If you read in history, most versions told that Sado was truly had many flaws, in addition to his political rivals who also loved to see him fall.
In the end, I know no father would want to kill his own son. It was as if Yeongjo's black reputation was one of this. But we know by the power of King, he should be able to forgive his son's sins, but he did not, marked that Sado was truly committed a great sin whether being added with provocations or not.

Yoo Ah-in as Sado is okay, but I just cannot get the idea of "bad person", it is as if Sado himself who thought too much. I cannot see how he was pressured by circumstances, instead, it was King Yeongjo who was more often in difficult situations.

In the end, whether it's portrayed by Yoo Ah-in or not, Sado's character was simply a not mature enough man and lack of wise in his era.

LADY HYEGYEONG
I have a huge bias on Moon Geunyoung so I just can say love her role here.
... So Jisub as King Jeongjo cannot help himself from laughing seeing Moon Geunyoung in her 60s.

PRINCESS HWAWAN
I also like Ji Jinhee no matter she often get a role as annoying girl.
Princess Hwawan was a biological little sister of Sado, was said King Yeongjo loved her so much. I just cannot understand why (in Yi San drama and historically) was said she dislike Jeongjo, her own nephew and wanted to overthrown him as king.

QUEEN JEONGSEON
I don't know why but being a very young queen to an old king is her fate which I consider kind of sad but well, who knows.
Facts:
- King Yeongjo didn't have any children from his queens, just like grandson Jeongjo also did. Their crown princes were from concubines.
- Queen Jeongseon's was born in 1745 and Jeongjo (Yeongjo's grandson) in 1752, which means the age of Queen and her "grandson" was only 8 years.

KING JEONGJO
For sure was said one of the most handsome (because wise and benevolent based on historical records) in Joseon Dynasty.
Lee Seojin (Yi San), So Jisub (The Throne), Hyunbin (The Fatal Encounter).
and many more...

Rants :
- I know in that era, Buddhism and Confucius beliefs were flourishing but it's just stupid to put such background music in scenes where Sado was "crazy", I'm not saying I'm kinda offended, it's just not necessary.

Rating:
3/5
They should have made Yeongjo's more charismatic.
Wait...this movie is about Sado or Yeongjo?? Hmm...
